According to Breakingnews.ie, Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore has made an accusation against the government of slowly putting out information that will help the government to bring about their new tax reform without a big uprising from the public. The idea of the slow leak of the information is to desensitize the public toward the idea of more taxation. The report goes on to state, “ Details have already been widely leaked, including proposals for a new property tax, household water charges, a carbon tax and reform of pension tax relief.” Finance Minister Brian Lenihan stated the taxes where high enough and suggested that the changes introduced will be offset by tax relief in other areas to make up the difference. According to Mr. Lenihan the massive hole in the public finances needed to be plugged by more spending cuts rather than tax increases. Mr. Gilmore insists that the people who can afford to pay more in taxes should do so as part of the fair response to the country’s economic problem.
