It appears 19 roads have been designated across the country as motorways. This issue is though is that 6 have not been built yet.
The National Roads Authority(NRA) has run out of money to build new roads the public sector is being looked at for the funding of € 1bn. The roads are on the west and east coasts and this would include an upgrade of the Newlands Cross in Dublin that allows traffic from Cork and Limerick to access the M50 without having to stop at the traffic lights. This upgrade is expected to cost € 100m to complete.
The 4 areas expected to be fixed currently are:
1. A motorway is planned that is approximately 53 kms. It will run from Gort in Co Galway to Tuam. This will go into planning to extend the road to Letterkenny.
2. A motorway in Arklow that will extend to Rathnew with a length of 16 km.
3. There is to be an upgrade of the Newlands Cross Junction on the N7 estimated to cost € 100m.
4. A 43 km motorway linking gorey to Enniscorthy in co Wexford, bypassing Enniscorthy and New Ross. An Bord Pleanala will hold a public hearing next month on this project.
These projects will require funding and its not available thru the NRA. The NRA has had its funding cut which leaves the roads to the mercy of private funding.
